Israeli who arrived in Nepal in the
framework of the local communities found themselves in the middle of
the disaster caused by the fatal earthquake that hit the country. These
volunteers are telling Channel 2 News about the destruction, and how
they try to help the locals.Volunteers of “Tevel b’Tzedek”, an organization that works with communities in the third world, including in Nepal, were in the Nangau village, when the earthquake shook the village. “After the earthquake we helped rehabilitate the village, to adapt to the conditions that the earthquake created, and helped build tents,” they say. “Today (Sunday) we dealt with the children, kept them busy so that their parents will be able to cook and to take furniture out of the houses.”
The Israeli volunteers try to think ahead about the needs of the villagers. “We set up our tent, and we hope the night will be quiet, with no rain,” they say. “We feel we have everything and we ask ourselves how we can contribute to the village. We try to help the families all the time, because the situation is tough. Most of the houses are ruined, full of cracks, some of them totally broken.”
The volunteers know their help will not be enough. “We hope there will be a lot of contributions and that many people will come to help, because people here lost everything they had,” they say. “There process of recovery is going to be long, and it will take a while for the locals to get back to themselves from the state they are in now.”
And how do the locals deal with the disaster? “It’s very nice to see the sense of community here, how one person helps the other. The larger family and friends distribute food. You can see this village is a community, and now it had unified into one working unit.”
The scope of the disaster in Nepal was unfolded today. The death toll is 2,500 people, and the authorities expect this number to rise. Eighteen people were killed on the Everest, difficult sights of destruction in the capital, Katmandu, and in the villages around the earthquake’s epicenter. The earthquake caused deaths in Bangladesh and in China as well. The communication and electricity infrastructure in Katmandu have totally collapsed.
At the same time, the rescue of Israelis from Nepal continues. The first plane from Nepal will land in Israeli tonight, with three premature babies who were born in a surrogacy process. Another plane, of MADA and Phoenix insurance, is expected to land tomorrow morning, with 12 babies. The Foreign Ministry is working to receive from the Nepali army helicopters, which will be used to rescue Israelis who are trapped in treks routes in different places in the country.
